How to sell personalised products on Shopify with Printful or Printify
Print-on-demand removes stock. Personalisation removes the last generic thing about the product. Together they need one more piece: a designer on the product page that produces a file your printer can use, and a way for each order to reach the printer without anyone retyping it. This guide sets that up on Shopify with Printful or Printify.

How the pieces fit
- The shopper designs their print on your product page: text, an uploaded image or an image generated with AI, inside the print area you allow.
- They order on Shopify as usual. The order carries their design and a print-ready file.
- Custivo hands the order and the file to the Printful or Printify account that product prints at.
Your prices, your checkout and your shipping settings stay in Shopify and in your print partner, exactly as they are.
Step 1: Set up the designer on the product
Create a customization scene for the product. It works on a 3D model for the truest preview, or on a flat product photo if you have no model yet; both produce the same output.
Then decide what the shopper may do: which fonts and colours, whether image upload or AI images are allowed on this product, and where the print area sits. The print area is the rule that matters most, because nothing can be placed where it cannot be printed.
Step 2: Connect your print partner
Connect your Printful or Printify account to Custivo once. The connection belongs to your Custivo account, so you can hold more than one: two Printful accounts for two regions, for example.
Then tell your store which of those accounts it prints at. On Printify, one account can hold several shops, so you also choose which Printify shop this store's orders go to.
Step 3: Route each product
Each product names the one account it prints at, where you publish its scene. Two products in one store can print at two different partners. If an order is not sent, the orders list says why and where to fix it: the store is not linked to an account, the product is not routed, or the connection itself needs attention.
Step 4: Place a test order before you rely on it
Order one customised product on your own store and follow it through:
- It appears in your Printful or Printify dashboard.
- The print file is attached, at the size and position the design was approved.
- The shipping address arrived in full.
Do this on every new product type and after any change to your Shopify app permissions. An order that cannot be sent is reported in the orders list rather than printed wrong, but a test order is how you find out before a customer does.
The limits, stated plainly
- Two partners. Printful and Printify are connected. Other print-on-demand services are not.
- Shopify triggers the hand-off. The automatic send runs on Shopify orders. On ikas, Wix and Salla, the order still arrives with the design and its print file, and you forward it to your printer yourself.
- Your own press works too. If you print in-house, skip steps 2 and 3: every order already carries the print-ready file.
Product customization and the Printful and Printify hand-off are included from the Grow plan up, and every plan starts with a free trial. The product customization page shows the designer the shopper uses. Our Shopify guide covers installing the app.
